I.Objectives and Requirements
The overall schemes and specific curricula for postgraduate programmes of Department of English & International Studies (DEIS) are arranged in accordance with the objectives and requirements for applied liberal arts disciplines by Ministry of Education (MOE), with the aim to cope with the challenges in the new millennium, carry out the strategy of developing the country through science and education and serve modernization. The programmes, following the educational policies of MOE for all-round development of intellectual and physical qualities and the motto of CFAU, aim to cultivate postgraduates in theoretical knowledge, and language proficiency, so as to forge them to be extraordinary, multifaceted senior professionals in state ministries and foreign-related institutions, e.g., Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Graduates are supposed to be competent for not only professional work, but also research and survey, to accomplish research project of various levels, and produce quality reports or papers.
To achieve the objectives, postgraduates of these programmes should:
1.Study diligently, improve the comprehensive quality, devote one’s strength and intelligence to the country’s development;
2.Be proficient in English, with prominent oral and writing performance;
3.Be familiar with relevant theoretical and professional knowledge systematically;
4.Be familiar with basic research methods in liberal arts and norms of academic writing, complete Master’s thesis in English;
5.Be able to communicate effectively in a second foreign language;
6.Be physically and mentally healthy.

III.Length of Schooling
Both English programmes last three years, of which the previous two years are for courses and the third year for thesis writing.
IV.Requirement on Credits
Both programmes require 49 credits, of which 36 credits are for required courses, 10 for elective courses, 1 for internship (it could be teaching assistant of more than 72 class hours, social work during vacation for more than a month with written work report and appraisal & recognition from the party the students have worked for).

I.Master’s Thesis and Defense
The Master’s thesis should be an academic paper. A postgraduate is required to write on a certain aspect in translation theories or American study under the supervision of the supervisor in no less than 15,000 words in the main body.
1. Postgraduates who meet the following requirements can submit the thesis:
•to have passed all the courses and obtained credits required by the programme;
•to meet the requirements of CFAU, such as school roll;
•to have paid tuition and other fees as required.
2. The thesis must be written in English and conform to academic norms. Thesis is reviewed anonymously. Of all the reviewers for one thesis, at least one is an external professional. The thesis proceeds into defense only when it is approved by at least two of the reviewers. The defense committee consists of at least three persons, one of whom must be external professional with the title of (associate) professor.
Postgraduates who pass the review and defense are conferred with degree of Master of English Language & Literature.
