“The Emerging New World Order” Workshop


On the afternoon of October 18th 2019, the round table meeting of “The Emerging Regional Order of East Asia” was co-hosted by CFAU and National Institute of International Strategy Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (NIIS CASS) at the Zhanlanguan Road Campus. In attendance were experts from the China Center for Contemporary World Studies (CCCWS) of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, School of International Studies of Renmin University of China, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, the editorial office of China Report ASEAN and other institutions as well as representatives from the host units.

Keynote speeches were delivered by Dr. Lam Peng Er, senior research fellow of the East Asian Institute (EAI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Dr. Nur Rachmat Yuliantoro, dean of the Department of International Relations of Universitas Gadjah Mada. Centering on the topic of “New East Asia Order under Globalization: Community, Competition and/or Conflict?”, Dr Lam used six analysis modes to deduce the future for the regional order of East Asia. Dr. Yuliantoro gave a speech on “Building New Regional Order? China’s Maritime Forces in Southeast Asia”, with a special analysis of maritime forces in the changing East Asian order. Then, domestic and foreign experts held a discussion on the new East Asian order, the rise of ASEAN countries, China-ASEAN cooperation under the BRI, China’s maritime forces and other topics. The discussion was engaging and fruitful.

There was a special “academic salon” during the round table meeting, with the aim of improving the research and international communication capabilities of doctoral students and postgraduates at CFAU. He Xiaokang, Ph.D. student majoring in International Studies, and Guan Keyi, postgraduate student majoring in English Language and Literature, reported their research upon invitation. Experts present offered wonderful comments on their reports.

The roundtable meeting was the first phase of the series of workshops on “The Emerging New World Order.” Under the guidance of the national foreign experts introduction plan, the workshop will organize several academic activities this semester, with the cooperation of the Institute of Asian Studies, Foreign Affairs Office and Graduate School of CFAU.
