Symposium on "China's Foreign Policy and External Relations in the New Era" held by CFAU Department of Diplomacy


The symposium on "China's Foreign Policy and External Relations in the New Era - from the 'Going Global' strategy to the 'Belt and Road' initiative," was held at the Exhibition Hall Road Campus of CFAU on April 23, 2018. Fifteen scholars from universities and research institutes attended the meeting, including China Foreign Affairs University, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Institute of International Studies, and the Chahar Institute. The meeting was sponsored by the Scientific Research Department of CFAU and co-organized by the Department of Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs Management.

The conference, chaired by Associate Professor Zhu Dandan of the Diplomacy Department at CFAU, focused on three sub-themes to explore the evolutionary characteristics and direction of China’s foreign policy and external relations in the new era. At the opening ceremony, Zheng Qirong, professor in the Diplomacy Department of CFAU and deputy director of the National Territorial Sovereignty and Marine Rights and Interests Collaborative Innovation Center, gave keynote speeches with the theme of "New Era" and China's foreign policy.


Under the first theme, Prof. Yu Tiejun from the School of International Relations of Peking University, Prof. Su Hao, Dr. Fan Chao, and Associate Professor Li Qianyu from CFAU explained the evolution and development direction of China's foreign policy and external relations since the 1980s, based on their respective research fields and perspectives. Prof. Long Xingchun, a researcher at the Chahar Institute and the West China Normal University, made concluding remarks and provided comments on the discussion.

Under the second theme, Cui Hongjian, a researcher at the China Institute of International Studies, summarized the development characteristics of Sino-European relations from the early 21st century to the present day, and pointed out that China’s foreign policy goals and implementation path should be adjusted based on the responses of target regions and key countries, as well as changes in regional and global structures. Li Yonghui, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, focused on the perspective of Russia and discussed the prospects for cooperation between China and Russia under the framework of “Belt and Road”. Zhu Xiaozhong, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Russia and Eastern Europe and the Central Asia Institute, used the mind map to reveal the difficulties and opportunities faced by China and Central and Eastern European countries in their cooperation under the "16+1" framework. Lu Nanquan, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, summarized and commented on the discussion.

Under the third theme, Prof. Kong Fanjun of the School of International Relations of Peking University combined specific cases and introduced the current situation of China's investment cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe and the specific issues to be noted in the future. Jia Ruixia, an associate researcher at the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, compared the status of scientific innovation in China and Central and Eastern Europe from the point of view of technological innovation and provided a new perspective on how the “Belt and Road” initiative could be implemented in the region. Professor Zhao Huaipu of CFAU made a summary and provided comments.

During the symposium, experts and scholars frankly exchanged their opinions. The atmosphere of the meeting was warm and constructive. Finally, Associate Professor Zhu Dandan summarized the meeting. All experts and scholars agreed that through this conference, they gained a deeper understanding of China’s foreign policy and external relations in the new era and expressed their expectations for the future development of China’s foreign relations.
