BIMUN 2017 Launches In Beijing

The Youth in Action:Leading from the Front 2017 Beijing International Model United Nations (BIMUN), sponsored by China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), opened on June 8. 

The four-day event, directed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, and the United Nations Association of China, brought together more than 500 students from 113 universities and high schools in the Chinese mainland, Macaw SAR , Hong Kong SAR, and other countries.

Li Baodong addresses the opening ceremony

Li Baodong, vice minister of Foreign Affairs, Fu Zhenbang, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, Fang Jun, vice minister of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ou Minxing, UNSECO chief representative in China, and Qin Yaqing, CFAU’s president, spoke at the opening ceremony.

Delegates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the United Nations Association of China and representatives from some embassies in China also attended. António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations sent his congratulations via a letter and video.

Li Baodong congratulated the convening of the BIMUN, and spoke highly of the MUN held by CFAU. He said the UN played an important role against the backdrop of a complicated and volatile international climate. He encouraged students to improve themselves through meaningful MUN activities to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the community of common destiny, new international relationships and win-win cooperation.

Fu Zhenbang addresses the opening ceremony

On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and All-China Students’ Federation (ACSF), Fu Zhengbang extended his congratulations. He said that the world is at a critical period of transition. He urged young students to take part in MUN, and shoulder the responsibility of building up the community of common destiny. He asked students to cultivate a global vision to enable engagement in international affairs. He also asked them to fight for the global dream, pursue the integration of global civilization, and work tirelessly to build a clean, beautiful, open and inclusive world of lasting peace, common prosperity and universal security.

António Guterres congratulates the convening of the BIMUN

In his congratulatory letter, António Guterres said: “The enthusiasm and ideas of BIMUN young delegates boost UN activities in various fields. The UN will always be with you while you are striving to promote our common values. Let us work jointly to build a more harmonious, inclusive and peaceful world.”

In 1995, CFAU introduced the MUN to China. Years of effort have seen the growth of BIMUN into one of the most influential UN activities in China and even in Asia at large. This year saw the establishment of the Beijing Rules of Procedure formulated on the basis of multilateral rules of procedure and various rules of procedures applied in the United Nations. The Beijing Rules of Procedure were designed to foster a better academic atmosphere and bring more authentic experiences. BIMUN consists of 10 committees. Chinese, English and French are its working languages. Young delegates are going to discuss topical issues such as sustainable utilization of maritime resources, climate change and food security, cross-border drug crimes, nuclear security, rights of elderly women, and Syrian refugees.
