Academic and policy research is a strand of the essential work of the Institute of Asian studies. The publications of the IAS mainly include four series, namely Asian Studies, East Asian Cooperation (Annual Report), East Asia Reports, and special studies reports.

 

Asian Studies

Asian Studies is the flagship research publication of the Institute of Asian Studies. The research aims to provide academic and intellectual support for policy-makings through the studies of the widely-concerned issues in the Asian regional process. The series are put into two categories Asian Studies (Quarterly Report) and Asian Studies (Annual Report).

 

East Asian Cooperation (Annual Report) 

East Asian Cooperation is a series of books published since 2009. Each book has two parts. The first part discusses the progress of the eight mechanisms in East Asian cooperation, including ASEAN Community, ASEAN Plus Three cooperation mechanism, China-ASEAN cooperation mechanism, Trilateral Cooperation Mechanism, East Asia Summit, ASEAN Regional Forum, Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation and the APEC. The second part studies and analyzes major issues of common concern in the regional process of the East Asia. In addition, each book lists the important events and compiles the key documents of the year in East Asian cooperation for research and decision-making reference.

 

East Asia Reports 

East Asia Reports was launched in June 2014, and has an average of 12 issues each year. Each focuses on studying one major policy issue. Its principle is “being based on East Asia, facing the Asia-Pacific and Serving Diplomacy”. The reports are written by Chinese experts and scholars on related fields of Asian Studies, following the latest developments of specific cooperation areas, and providing policy recommendations. East Asia Reports has become an influencing publication, gaining attention from Ministry of Foreign affairs of China and earning praise widely from academic colleagues. 

 

Special Studies Reports

The Institute of Asian Studies has carried out a large number of studies on some specific subjects relating to regional cooperation and Track I diplomacy, such as research projects supported by Asian Regional Cooperation Special Funds, policy-oriented research projects trusted by relevant ministries, NEAT Working Group research projects and NACT research projects. Several dozens of special research reports have been submitted. Some reports cover grand topics such as the cooperation architecture in Asia-Pacific and big power relations, China’s neighborhood diplomacy strategy and policy, China’s neighborhood security and economic cooperation in East Asia, China-ASEAN relations, and the situation in Northeast Asia and countermeasures. Some cover the key areas of cooperation or specific issues, such as financial cooperation, investment cooperation, infrastructure connectivity in East Asia, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and cooperation in disaster management in East Asia. The research outcomes have been highly affirmed and recognized by relevant decision-making bodies, and have won awards issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.
