China Foreign Affairs University Legal Aid Center (Legal Clinic) is a student organization designed to offer legal aid to the public, especially women, children, senior citizens and disabled people. The center was founded in October 1998, and it was initially named China Foreign Affairs University Legal Assistance Center.
The center is run by the Department of International Law and is also under the instruction of the Chinese Law Clinic Education Committee. The Center has about 20 members, including a director who manages the decision-making, and a deputy director who deals with the financial affairs. Both posts have a one-year tenure. It has operated on the principle of “using what I have learned for the community I love” since its foundation. The center undertakes cases, provides a legal consultancy service and legal publicity, adopting a rigorous and pragmatic approach to its work combined with a serious and responsible attitude. It also organizes and participates in special activities inside and outside the university, becoming a coordinator of internal activities and a platform in touch with the external community.
The main work of the center involves providing legal aid in the form of legal consultations, writing legal documents for clients, serving as a case agency in the field of civil law and administrative law. A group of staff is available in the center’s office for legal aid affairs from13:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and Sunday except during the summer and winter holidays. The center promises to respond to legal aid cases within seven days. The center has succeeded in dealing with dozens of legal aid cases, providing legal consultations and writing hundreds of legal documents. This work has received great appreciation from recipients. In addition, the center annually reviews its work and compiles representative cases for further research and reference.
The center’s provision of legal publicity is another important activity. It provides legal publicity to communities and schools. On important commemorative days such as the International Consumer Rights Protection Day (March 15) and Constitution Day (December 4), the center cooperates with the relevant government departments and nearby schools to carry out legal publicity for the public.
The center holds a moot court once a year and it forms a vital part of the practical education for the students. Great effort is spent on preparing and organizing a highly professional moot court. This activity promotes the ability of the members, and the center wins the recognition from the entire university.
Legal knowledge competitions organized by the center are mainly for the Department of International Law. The content covers basic knowledge of theoretical jurisprudence, applied jurisprudence and legal English. The purpose of the competitions is to enhance the enthusiasm for the study of law among freshmen students. This activity also forms an important channel of communication between teachers and students.
In terms of external communication, the center maintains good long-term relationships with student unions and legal aid institutions at other universities. The communication mainly focuses on seminars discussing professional problems, meetings to exchange experiences of legal aid, cooperation on legal publicity, and joining in related celebrations. The center gains experience of and closes the gap between other institutions; at the same time it promotes its own reputation through this kind of communication and cooperation with similar associations at other universities.
