Undergraduate
The department offers a variety of courses for undergraduates in the four-year LL.B. degree program.
The department has 240 undergraduate students studying in the four-year program for the LL.B. degree, and it enrolls domestic and international students in arts or science subjects. The students are divided into three classes for each grade, with 20 students in each class. The ratio between faculty members and students is almost the highest among universities in China.
Students of the department acquire solid knowledge in law and the English language. Their English can reach the level of English major undergraduates. Comprehensive quality and a strong team spirit enable students not only to perform well in various cultural and sports activities at CFAU, but also attain outstanding achievements in national and international competitions.
The 16 compulsory courses required by the Ministry of Education include Constitution Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Chinese Legal History, Economic Law, Public International Law, Private International Law and International Economic Law, etc. The program also offers more than 40 elective courses including International Human Rights Law, Law of Treaties, Law of the Sea, International Organization Law, International Trade Law, International Finance Law, International Investment Law, International Commercial Arbitration Law, International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Judicial System and Cases, Comparative Law, American Contract Law, International Environmental Law, International Tax Law, International Commercial Law and Arbitration Law, etc. To optimize students’ structure of knowledge, sophomores can select English and International Economics and Trade as their second major. After completing the required credits and graduation thesis, a double Bachelor’s degree is conferred.
After four-years of undergraduate study, some students continue their studies in domestic universities while others choose leading international universities such as New York University (US), Georgetown University (US), University of California, Berkeley (US), University of Illinois (US), Cornell University (US), University of Pennsylvania (US), University of Edinburgh (UK), University of London (UK), Leiden University (The Netherlands), Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (France), and Waseda University (Japan). Some students are employed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other central government authorities, foreign-related enterprises, law firms and international organizations. Most of them perform excellently in their chosen career.
Graduate
The department offers a two-year LL.M. program in International Law for which CFAU has a long history and good reputation. This program includes three research areas: Public International Law, Private International Law and International Economic Law. Courses for the degree include Seminar on Public International Law, Law of International Organizations, International Judicial System and Case Studies, Seminar on International Trade Law, and Seminar on International Investment Law, etc.
The department offers a two-year J.M. program for graduate students. The compulsory courses include: Jurisprudence, Chinese Legal History, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Criminal Procedural Law, Civil Procedural Law, Administrative Law, Economic Law, International Law, Legal Professional Norm and Ethics, Legal Instrument and Legal Negotiation, etc.. Candidates are awarded the J.M. degree after earning the required credits, taking a minimum six-month internship in a law practice, and completing a thesis.
The department also awards doctoral degree in Foreign Affairs Law in conjunction with the Foreign Affairs Department, and in International Politics and International Law in conjunction with the Institute of International Relations.
