IV. Programme Orientation and Features
This programme is arranged according to Ministry of Education’s requirements on higher learning & Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ instructions and the schooling orientation and objectives of CFAU. It aims to cultivate translation & interpreting personnel who are proficient in English & Chinese, competent in translation & interpreting, erudite, and mentally strong.
This major, featuring DEIS’ education in diplomacy and foreign services, grooms graduates for translation & interpreting commissions for state leaders, state ministries, e.g., Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and major international events.
V. Objectives
This programme aims to cultivate translation & interpreting personnel who are firm in political stand, socially responsible, mentally strong, informed in international politics, economy, law, culture, society, etc., proficient in English language, in particular in terms of listening, speaking, reading, writing and theory & practice in translation & interpreting, and competent in translation & interpreting.
IV. Professional Requirements
Upon completion of the programme, Students are expected to
1. Be familiar with relevant policies, guiding principles, laws and regulations of our country;
2. Obtain English proficiency in terms of listening, speaking, reading and writing;
3. Have profound knowledge in Chinese language, Chinese culture & the appreciation of it;
4. Acquire basic theories, methods and skills of interpretation and translation and apply them to practice, and be able to translate and interpret between Chinese and English skillfully;
5. Have a broad scope of knowledge, especially knowledge in areas closely related to diplomacy and foreign services, such as international politics, international economics, international law, and cultural exchanges;
6. Be familiar with China’s national condition, society and culture of English speaking countries;
7. Be able to communicate effectively in second foreign language;
8. Be able to do research and field work through IT-facilitated data search and document retrieval;
9. Acquire five basics ( political quality, professional skills, language abilities, communicative strategies and information technologies) and five competences (research, case-handling, diplomatic protocol, negotiation, and innovation).

Courses at primary stage are: Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, English Listening Comprehension, Listening and Interpreting, Oral English, Writing, Survey of the UK, American History Overview public speaking: Skills and Practice, Discussions on Issues in Contemporary China, English Lexicology, Advanced English Grammar, Appreciating British and American Cinema, Introduction to Chinese Culture, Classical Reading in Humanities, and English Debate.
Courses at advanced stage are: Diplomatic Interpreting, Basics of Consecutive Interpretation, Translating Current International Affairs, Introduction to Simultaneous Interpretation, Sight Interpretation, Translation Theory, Discourse Translation, General Linguistics, English Literature: History and Selected Readings, American Literature: History and Selected Readings, Chinese and Western Culture: A Comparative Study, History of Western Civilization, Multicultural American Literature and Culture, Themes and Topics in American History, Literature Translation, Translation of Classics, Translation-oriented English-Chinese Contrastive Study, and a History of the American Thought.
Extensional courses for diplomacy and foreign services are: Selected Readings in International Politics, Selected Readings in International Economics, English Legal Document Reading, Introduction to the Contemporary Chinese Diplomatic Thoughts, Introduction to European Union, Studies of East Asian Cooperation, Contemporary American Government and Policy, American Foreign Policy, International Relations Theories, Multilateral Diplomacy, English Topical Discussion, Mass Media, Economic Topics and Issues, and China's Foreign Policy: Theories and Practices.
Practical courses for diplomacy and foreign services are: Diplomatic Documents and Diplomatic Practice, and Translation of Diplomatic Documents.
IX. Curriculum Design
Curriculum is designed according to CFAU’s general educational goal, that is, fostering professional personnel with strong background of diplomacy and outstanding proficiency in foreign languages. The curriculum is roughly composed of three parts: elementary courses to improve students’ language proficiency, courses of theory and practice of translation & interpreting, and extensional courses. Elementary courses focus on students’ basic language skills, particularly listening, speaking, reading and writing, aiming to lay for them a solid foundation of English. Translation & interpreting courses and extensional courses, which help students further improve their level of proficiency in English, focus on students’ translation & interpreting skills, i.e., help students acquire basic theories, methods and skills in translation and interpreting and apply them to practice, and enable students to translate and interpret competently. Meanwhile, these courses guide students through the learning of a range of subjects in English so as to expand their scope of knowledge, in particular, knowledge closely related to diplomacy and foreign services, such as international politics, international economics, international law, society and culture. As far as teaching methodology is concerned, students are, in extensional courses, encouraged to do research project and have sufficient discussion in the teaching and learning process to develop their research abilities and independent thinking.

XI. Practice-oriented Activities
While class teaching helps to equip students with solid language foundation and theoretical & practical skills for translation & interpreting, a variety of field work are arranged throughout the programme to enhance what the students have learned. Students are required to take part in practice-oriented activities arranged by DEIS and CFAU. These include community immersion, social survey, military training, practical activities, graduate internship and experimental learning.
XII. Career Prospects
Graduates stand a good chance of working for the following organizations or companies: departments dealing with diplomatic and foreign services in state ministries such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign affairs offices of city and provincial levels, news agencies, publishing houses, financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, Chinese-foreign joint ventures, etc.
