IV. Programme Orientation and Features

China Foreign Affairs University cultivates the best talents for China’s foreign services. Directly affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, it is distinctive in its intellectual integrity and educational excellence. CFAU adheres to the educational philosophy of fostering professional personnel with profound knowledge in diplomacy and outstanding proficiency in foreign languages, and is dedicated to cultivating for Chinese diplomacy and foreign services extraordinary and quality talents with “true patriotism and global vision, established expertise and great proficiency in foreign languages and interdisciplinary knowledge”, who are competent at not only diplomacy & foreign services and other practical work, but also survey, research and translation & interpreting in institutions for diplomacy, foreign services, economic exchanges, trade, finance, justice, education, etc.

This programme, featuring DEIS’ tradition of strict requirement of English language proficiency, knowledge & practice in diplomacy, international relations, international laws, international economics, grooms multifaceted English professionals for diplomacy and foreign services.

V.Objectives
Aiming to equip students with “five basics” and “five competences”, the programme aspires to foster high-calibre multifaceted English professionals qualified for diplomatic and foreign services. Graduates are expected to be Marxism-minded, firm in political stand, socially responsible, mentally strong, informed with international politics, economy, law, culture, society, etc., proficient in English language, in particular in terms of listening, speaking, reading, writing and theory & practice in translation & interpreting.

VI. Professional Requirements

Upon completion of the programme, Students are expected to

1.Be familiar with relevant policies, guiding principles, laws and regulations of our country;

2.Obtain English proficiency in terms of listening, speaking, reading and writing;

3.Be competent in interpreting and translation;

4.Be familiar with China’s national condition, society and culture of English speaking countries;

5.Acquire basic theories and knowledge in linguistics, literature, translation studies, international politics, diplomacy, foreign work, etc.;

6.Be able to communicate effectively in second foreign language;

7.Be able to do research and field work through IT-facilitated data search and document

retrieval;

8.Be able to communicate and write concerning academic research or survey effectively in Chinese;

9.Acquire five basics (political quality, professional skills, language abilities, communicative strategies and information technologies) and five competences (research, case-handling, diplomatic protocol, negotiation, and innovation).

Courses at primary stage are: Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, Elementary English Listening Comprehension, Advanced English Listening Comprehension, Oral English, Writing, Survey of the UK, American History Overview, Public Speaking: Skills and Practice, Discussions on Issues in Contemporary China, English Lexicology, Advanced English Grammar, Appreciating British and American Cinema, Introduction to Chinese Culture, Classical Reading in Humanities, and English Debate.

Courses at advanced stage are: Methodology and Thesis Writing, General Linguistics, English Literature: History and Selected Readings, American Literature: History and Selected Readings, Chinese and Western Culture: A Comparative Study, History of Western Civilization, Interpretation, Translation, Multicultural American Literature and Culture, Themes and Topics in American History, English Class Conducted by Foreign Teachers, Literature Translation, Translation of Classics, Translation-oriented English-Chinese Contrastive Study, and a History of the American Thought.

Extensional courses for diplomacy and foreign services are: Selected Readings in International Politics, English Legal Document Reading, Introduction to the Contemporary Chinese Diplomatic Thoughts, Introduction to European Union, Studies of East Asian Cooperation, Contemporary American Government and Policy, International Relations Theories, Multilateral Diplomacy, English Topical Discussion, Mass Media, Economic Topics and Issues, and China's Foreign Policy: theories and practices.

Practical courses for diplomacy and foreign services are: Diplomatic Documents and Diplomatic Practice, and Translation of Diplomatic Documents.

IX. Curriculum Design

Curriculum is designed according to CFAU’s general educational goal, that is, fostering professional personnel with strong background of diplomacy and outstanding proficiency in foreign languages. The curriculum is roughly composed of two parts: elementary courses during the initial stage and advanced courses at the final stage. Elementary courses focus on students’ basic language skills, particularly listening, speaking, reading and writing, aiming to lay for them a solid foundation of English. Advanced courses, which help students further improve their level of proficiency in English, focus on expertise in diplomacy and foreign services. Some courses are for the training of students’ language skills, e.g., methodology and academic writing, interpreting, translation; the others guide students through the learning of a range of subjects in English such as British & American society and culture, international politics, diplomacy, international economics and trade, which are prerequisite for their working for diplomatic and foreign services. As far as teaching methodology is concerned, students are, in most cases, encouraged to do research project and have sufficient discussion in the teaching and learning process to develop their research abilities and independent thinking.

XI. Practice-oriented Activities

Students are required to take part in practice-oriented activities arranged by DEIS and CFAU. These include community immersion, social survey, military training, practical activities, graduate internship and experiemental learning.

XII. Appraisal

Appraisal of students is conducted strictly according to Regulations for Undergraduates of CFAU, CFAU Bylaws on Appraisal of Undergraduates’ Performances in Courses, and CFAU Syllabus on Practice-oriented Teaching.

XIII. Career Prospects

Graduates of DEIS stand a good chance of working for the following organizations or companies: departments dealing with diplomatic and foreign services in state ministries such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, news agencies, publishing houses, financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, Chinese-foreign joint ventures, and foreign affairs offices of city and provincial levels.
