On the morning of May 25, 2018, Professor Kong Fanqing, Vice President of the City University of Macau, gave a lecture entitled “Language Situation and Language Policy in Macau” in the lecture hall of the library on Shahe Campus at the invitation of the Department of English and International Studies (DEIS).

Professor Kong Fanqing talked about the history of the City University of Macau, shared her experience and views on language education, and introduced the social, economic, educational and other aspects of the Macau Special Administrative Region. In particular, Professor Kong mentioned that Cantonese and English are the most widely-used languages in Macau and elaborated on their popularity and educational modes. She also highlighted local policies of promoting Mandarin education and the fact that Portuguese, one of the official languages, is already falling out of favor in daily life.

After that, Professor Kong answered students’ questions on various issues such as the use of Cantonese, children's language education and the development of Portuguese around the world.
