Master’s Degree in Diplomacy

After 60 years of development and refinement, the department has gained an excellent and influential reputation and has become a training base, a base for academic research and policy consultation, and a platform for senior international exchanges.

 

Training objectives

The study of diplomacy is guided by Marxism-Leninism and Deng Xiaoping Theory, with the aim of training special talents who are loyal to their homeland, possess high morality, and are fit for both teaching and research within all the foreign affairs sections, foreign-related enterprises and institutions. Students are required to grasp systematic and basic theories as well as specialist knowledge, to have good political qualification and fitness, to have good foreign language proficiency, and have an all-round development in terms of morality, intelligence and physical qualities.

 

Sub-areas of research

Diplomatic studies, contemporary history of Chinese foreign relations, and Chinese foreign relations.

 

Length of schooling

The Master’s Degree Program lasts for two years. The three semesters are devoted to courses. During the third semester students should start their dissertations under the guidance of their supervisor, finishing the writing of their dissertation and presenting their defense in the fourth semester.  

 

Curriculum

The master’s degree of diplomacy consists of basic and subsidiary courses. The basic courses include An Introduction to Diplomatic Studies, Studies on Contemporary Chinese Foreign Relations, Principles of Political Science, Research Methodology of Social Science, The Diplomatic History of the Recent and Modern China. The subsidiary courses include Foreign Policy Decision-making and Studies on Diplomatic Strategy. Elective courses include Case Studies in Diplomacy, Foreign Policy Analysis, The History of Diplomatic Thought, Diplomatic Negotiations, Studies on Contemporary Consular and Overseas National Issues, Studies on Sino-U.S. Relations, Post-War Sino-Japanese Relations, Relations of China and the Southeast Asian Countries, Studies on China’s National Security, Studies on Diplomatic History of Eastern Countries and Public Diplomacy.
