【Brand Activities】Beijing International Model United Nations (BIMUN)

Under the leadership and advocacy of Mr. Yuan Shibin, late professor of Dept. of English and International Studies of China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), and Mr. Xiong Zhiyong, a graduate faculty member of China Foreign Affairs University, China’s first Model United Nations for university students was held in 1995. This marked the unprecedented presence of Model UN activities in China, and hence heralded a robust development of Model UN with its far-reaching significance.

In this sense, as the vanguard that first introduced Model UN to China, China Foreign Affairs University features a long and glorious Model UN history. In 2001, China Foreign Affairs University Model United Nations Association (CFAUMUNA) was founded by a group of students in the University. Since 2002, the association has successfully held the nationwide “Beijing International Model United Nations” (BIMUN) for sixteen times, which has become the flagship conference in China with its remarkably high standards and academic level.

Currently, there are two Honorary Presidents of the Association, namely Mr. LU Shumin, President, United Nations Association of China, and Prof. QIN Yaqing, President, China Foreign Affairs University. Apart from that, the Association also has a Board of Advisors with 6 experts, namely Late Prof. YUAN Shibin, Former Professor, Department of English and International Studies of China Foreign Affairs University; Prof. ZHENG Qirong, Former Vice President, China Foreign Affairs University; Prof. WANG Fan, Vice President, China Foreign Affairs University; Prof. GAO Fei, Assistant to President, China Foreign Affairs University; Prof. ZHAO Huaipu, Director-General, Division of the Graduate Studies Administration, China Foreign Affairs University, and Mr. Alain NOUDEHOU, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in China.

BIMUN provides a unique platform for university and high school students to promote the understanding of international relations and global affairs. Each year, around 400 young talented students from over 30 prestigious high schools and more than 50 prominent universities including those in Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as overseas universities from the United States, Russia, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Indonesia, gather at China Foreign Affairs University and debate over the major issues on the agenda.

Rigorous Academic Preparation

Beijing International Model United Nations is renowned for its rigorous academic preparation with a Department of Academics in charge of the academic research of each conference. Bearing in mind the principle of “academic work as the top priority”, the academic preparation of each year’s conference lasts six to seven months, which includes thorough research of the topics, composition of study guides, rule setting, and arrangement of the Dais’ work during the conference. Every member of the Department of Academics makes full and careful preparation, including offering research guidance and help to delegates before the conference, guiding delegates through the procedure during the conference, as well as ensuring the topics are fully and thoroughly discussed.

Innovation and Sense of Times

With the rapid growth of Model UN activities in all over China, the topics chosen by different conferences tend to be similar and repetitive. In order to ensure topics are hot-discussed and innovative every year, we are cautious in choosing topics for the conference. International hot issues are chosen as topics, mainly in areas like international politics, economy, culture, public health and the environment. Innovation is shown not only by new topics, but also through our study and reform of the rules of procedures of the conference.

Fun

BIMUN conferences are usually arranged in a tight schedule. It is an arena for clashes of ideas and the competition between delegates on their articulation and eloquence. More importantly, it is a place for delegates to get to know new friends with shared interests. Every year the association members prepare an elaborate Social Event for delegates so that they can forget about the nervousness and tiredness during the sessions and show their versatile side of personality. This brings excitement and joy for the delegates and helps build an atmosphere of warm friendship among them.
