CNAIS Annual Meeting Held in Beijing

On January 12th 2018, the China National Association for International Studies (CNAIS) held its annual meeting for 2017. This year’s meeting, on the theme of “Implementing the Spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC, Breaking New Ground for Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics”, brought together more than 120 representatives from institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIC), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Peking University (PKU), Renmin University of China (RUC), the University of International Relations (UIR), Tongji University (TJU), Nankai University (NKU) and the Charhar Institute.


At the beginning, Zhang Yesui, secretary of the CPC of the MFA, gave a report on the current situation and policies. He reviewed the achievements made in China’s foreign affairs since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, and stressed the importance of fully understanding the new missions, new goals and new plans for the course of diplomacy after the 19th National Congress of the CPC. Mr. Zhang spoke highly of the work that the CNAIS had done and urged it to actively play its role as an important national think tank, to improve its professional academic ability and to promote research on the theory and practice of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, providing the international community with Chinese wisdom.

Next, the executive vice president of the CNAIS, Qin Yaqing, delivered the annual work report, with Vice President Wang Fan serving as moderator. In this report he noted that in 2017 the CNAIS played a positive role and advanced the comprehensive development of the discipline of international relations in China by expanding the scope of its academic activities, tracking hot-spot issues and cultivating young scholars through such activities as seminars, the 1st Annual Thesis Contest, and the 1st Young Scholar Forum.


Later, Vice President Tao Jian chaired a conference in which Vice Presidents Han Fangming, Qi Zhenhong, Chen Dongxiao, Jia Qingguo and Zhu Feng delivered key-note speeches and shared their ideas on issues like major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, new major-country relations and changes in the international landscape.

In the afternoon, group discussions were held on the topics of “New Major-Country Relations and Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics” and “Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind and Global Governance”.

At the closing ceremony, Secretariat Sun Jisheng expressed her gratitude to all member institutions for their support and said that CNAIS would serve as a better platform for academic exchanges and discipline development in the future.
