On the morning of December 28th 2017, researcher Yang Jiemian, former dean of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies and director of its academic board, delivered a lecture entitled "The Mission and Theoretical Attainment of Diplomats in the New Era" at the Shahe library lecture hall of China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU). He also conducted discussions and academic exchanges with the school’s young teachers on "The Construction of China's Diplomatic Theory and Strategic Planning." The event was jointly organized by the China Diplomatic Theory Research Center and the Beijing Foreign Exchange and Foreign Affairs Management Research Base. Professor Qin Yaqing chaired the lectures and discussions.

During the lecture, Yang Jiemian expressed his views on the historical inheritance of Chinese culture, the mission of Chinese diplomats, the practice and conscientiousness of Chinese diplomacy, the theoretical self-confidence of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, and the difficulties of nation building, as well as putting forward the mission and requirements of the new era for diplomatic talents. In the symposium, Mr. Yang impressed the audience with deep insights into how China's diplomacy went from concepts to theory, how China is going to be internationalized, and how colleges and universities can play a greater role in cultivating diplomatic talent.
