2017 CNAIS Symposium held in Xiamen

The 2017 Symposium of the China National Association for International Studies (CNAIS) was held at Huaqiao University in Xiamen on October 27, 2017. The theme of Collaboration Among BRICS and the Promotion of the Belt Road Initiative, attracted more than 40 experts and scholars from universities, thinktanks and government departments such as China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), Fudan University, Beijing Normal University, University of International Relations, National University of Defence Technology, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Soochow University and Huaqiao University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Topics such as Relations Among BRICS, Global Governance and Major-country Diplomacy and Promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative were discussed. Professor Qin Yaqing, the executive vice president of CNAIS and president of CFAU, and Professor Xu Xipeng, the president of Huaqiao University, addressed the opening ceremony.

Professor Qin extended his gratitude for the great support provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all CNAIS members and Huaqiao University as the organizer of the symposium. He said CNAIS attached great significance to the study of theories of international relations and the practice of diplomacy. CNAIS provided a platform for Chinese scholars and experts in international studies to exchange views, deepen their understanding and offer valuable suggestions on boosting major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics through symposia on major issues in Chinese diplomacy and international relations.

Professor Xu Xipeng welcomed the delegates to Huaqiao University. He stressed that the development of the discipline of international studies improved Huaqiao University’s ability in the research of Chinese relations overseas. Professor Xu also pointed out that, apart from strengthening its characteristic disciplines, Huaqiao University would also push forward the comprehensive construction of the discipline of international studies.  

The keynote speech session was hosted by Sun Jisheng, the secretary-general of CNAIS and vice president of CFAU. Huang Zheng, deputy director-general of the Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, elaborated on General Secretary Xi Jinping’s thoughts on diplomacy and the collaboration among BRICS, stressing that the Policy Planning Department would cement the cooperation with colleges and universities and thinktanks.

Feng Shaolei, the vice president of CNAIS and professor at East China Normal University, gave a lecture on Sino-US-Russia trilateral relations, and Zhang Guobin, the secretary-general of the Charhar Institute, talked about the positive role of public diplomacy in promoting cooperation among the BRICS members.

 

Lively and fruitful discussions were held on Relations Among BRICS, and Promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, Global Governance and Major-country Diplomacy.   


During the closing session, Prof. Sun Jisheng said that CNAIS would hold more symposia on global issues in international relations. She hoped the experts and scholars could offer policy proposals and make greater contributions to Chinese diplomacy and the discipline of Chinese international studies .
